Sen. Dick Adams

“I’m in support of this bill...about 6 or 7 years ago I tried a case, a civil case, and a young mother asked to be excused from the jury because of a sick child at home and the judge was not very understanding and forgiving.  And she sat on a 3-day jury trial and was running to the phone every time we took a break...She sometimes raised her hand to be excused.

I felt...that she really didn’t have her mind into the case itself and it was a very important case for me, and I felt...that someone else would have been better served if she had been allowed to step aside.”

“I have been practicing in these courts for 25 years, and I know everything she (Kathye Schattner) said is true (about at-home mothers with babies and young children not being allowed to defer their jury duty).  I just wish I had the foresight to file this (legislation - Senate Bill 32 - 2000 Session of Kentucky’s General Assembly)”
