Over the years, we’ve worked with individuals on the issue of jury duty, and we’ve testified in favor of bills designed to protect the parent/child relationship from disruption due to jury duty. Judges have a lot of discretion in excusing people from jury duty, and some have unfortunately been very hostile to at-home parents of young children. People caring for a disabled child or an ill or elderly relative also need to have their jury duty deferred. Some judges do not consider the work of caregiving a legitimate reason to be excused from jury duty. One way to address this problem is to change the law in your state, to give caregivers the right to defer jury duty.
