In April 2003, R.W., a full-time mother of three children under the age of 5, was called for jury duty in Juneau, Alaska. She brought her 9-month-old baby with her to the court room, as she had never left her in the care of a stranger. While in the court room, the judge embarrassed her in front of thirty other jurors by saying that bringing her daughter with her was unacceptable behavior! When she asked to be excused from jury duty in order to care for her young children, the judge angrily responded, “If you don’t want to serve jury duty, turn in your voter registration!” |
