California

Cathy Kavanagh - Lafayette, California

I initially received my jury summons within a week of the due date of my now six month old. At that time I was given a postponement. Two weeks ago I received a new summons in the mail with a report date of March 20,2000. I called the "nice" people at Jury services on March 6,2000 and was told by one of the "friendly" employees that I had already been given one postponement and "just because you are breastfeeding doesn't mean you can have another postponement". I sent back my jury summons with a request for excuse accompanied by letters from my daughters pediatrician as well as my obstetrician. I am still not confident that based on the attitude of the county jury services employees, that I will be excused."

Angela Ponzini - Menlo Park, California

"I have been sick to my stomach for a week now since I have received a notice from the San Mateo County Jury Commissioner that I am not exempt from jury duty for the reason that I am nursing my infant! They highlighted "personal inconvenience and child care" are not legal excuses. This is completely outrageous. I can not believe that California State Law does not provide an exemption like the states of Iowa and Idaho for nursing and stay at home mothers with young children."
