Kansas

Jill Crockett, a stay-at-home mom of a 14-month old son was called for jury duty by the Johnson County Courthouse in Olathe, Kansas, 10th Judicial District.

This is her story:

When I was called for jury duty, I wrote that I have no one to watch my son during the day and would not leave him with strangers.  I was told I still had to report, so I had to take my son to court with me ...

I had to try and hold a squirming, very loud toddler for at least an
hour before they even acknowledged us!  I was then chosen to sit in the jury box.  My poor baby had to sit on my lap, crying to get down, until all 24 potential jurors were called.

Finally, the judge noticed us! He rudely asked me why I had brought my son.

He went on to grill me with more questions, such as who normally would watch my son, what would I do with him in a case of emergency, etc.

Eventually, the judge dismissed me since I had my baby with me, but said I would be called again within a year and would be expected to find a place to leave my son!

What should I do? It seems this court is trying to make me decide between my childs safety or contempt of court!
