Genevieve Hobart, a full-time breastfeeding mother of her 10-month-old daughter was called for jury duty by the Seventy-Seventh (77th) District Court of Michigan in Mecosta County. She promptly wrote a letter to the court explaining that she still breastfeeds her daughter on demand (about ten times per day) and her daughter has only had a bottle four times in her young life. In the letter she also mentioned that her daughter was born premature, and it would be detrimental to her daughter’s nutritional health if she could not nurse!
Even though Genevieve informed the court about her current circumstances, the unsympathetic female Chief Judge refused to excuse her! This is currently a very difficult situation for Genevieve, as she is inexperienced at pumping her breast milk, and has not ever expressed enough to fill a bottle. Also, her husband will have to take vacation so she can report for jury duty the first day. Genevieve is hoping to be excused when she appears at court, but it doesn’t appear too likely, given this court’s initial response to Genevieve’s request.. |

Michigan residents, please see information on Michigan House Bill 4455, which would have allowed parents or guardians having active care and custody of a child under the age of 4 (during the courts’ normal hours of operation), to defer jury service, upon request. The above link will explain how you can help with ongoing efforts to enact this worthy, family-affirming initiative. |
