Silvia Campbell was called for jury duty in March 2003 in Shallotte, N.C. She reported to the Bolivia County Court House for juror orientation and to speak to the judge to ask for a deferral from jury duty since she is a stay-at-home mother of 2 girls, 9 and 7, and had no family in town to care for them. She waited in the jury room for 5 hours before she could speak to the judge. When her turn finally arrived, the judge denied her request. Instead, he insultingly ordered her to “make friends” during the next two months who would be able to look after her children while she was serving jury duty. |
