New Hampshire

Patricia Adamkowski, a full-time, breastfeeding mom was summoned for jury duty by the Superior Court of Coos County in Lancaster, New Hampshire, on October 3, 2003.  Although she requested to be deferred because she was breastfeeding her

11-month-old baby and was also caring for her 4-year-old, her request was denied.

On October 3, 2003, Patricia reported for jury selection and respectfully spoke to the judge to ask for deferral (again), saying she would like to serve (on a jury)  but at a point in time when her children were older and she would no longer be nursing.  The judge REFUSED to defer her and gave her a patronizing lecture about how she had a civic duty to serve, etc.  What about her moral duty to feed and care for her children?  No one else can breast feed her baby for herHer stomach was in knots the whole day because of how disrespectfully she was treated and how the court had complete disregard for the safety and welfare of her children.
