If you have been mistreated by the Courts in this way, or if you know of others that have, Please click on the letter to e-mail me and share your story!

C.B., a full-time mother of 2 small children, was called for Jury duty in April 2001.  This is her story:

...On April 15th I received a letter from Battle Ground Municipal Court in Battle Ground, Washington stating I would be required to serve jury duty from May 1st through May 31st 2001.  I immediately wrote a letter requesting exemption.  On May 20th I received a letter telling me that I was not exempted from service yet if I desired to contest this I could go the courthouse at 2:30 p.m. (that day) and state my case.

I got back in my car and drove to the courthouse with two children in tow; one who had been very ill.  We sat in the courtroom for 45 minutes not making a peep when my 18-month-old daughter cried out for 5 seconds.  I was immediately barked at by the judge and ordered to remove my daughter from his courtroom.  After waiting another 15 minutes in the hallway with no seating, we were finally addressed.  Needless to say, he had no interest or compassion for my situation.  I informed him I had no childcare, then he asked me if anyone babysat my children (I thought I was pretty clear saying “no childcare”) Then he asked who watched my son while I was delivering my daughter in the hospital!!...

...I then asked him when I needed to be present and how long it might last. (Commonly things you need to tell someone who will be watching your children)

He told me it could go from 8:30 a.m. to as late as 10:00 p.m. at night!

At this point I was in tears, not knowing how I was going to do this, and left the courtroom with children in arms feeling like I had been run over by a truck...
