Subject: Family Friendly Jury Duty
Legislation for Kentucky
Dear Senator (or Representative) ___________
Would you please support legislation that will
require a judge to defer family caregivers from jury service? Family
caregivers are those
Kentucky citizens having active care and custody of a child
or children under 6 years of age or a person who is essential to the care of
an aged or infirm relative.
As you can probably imagine, jury duty presents significant problems for
these Kentucky caregivers because:
-
A jury service
commitment is very unpredictable, which makes it extremely difficult to
obtain suitable all-day childcare/care for dependent family member.
-
Substitute care
arrangements for children or family members (for jury duty) places a
financial hardship on families with only one source of income.
-
A frantic mother
would not make a good juror!
Kentucky has already passed a family friendly
jury duty law that insures the breastfeeding relationship between mother and
baby will not be broken due to a nursing mother being forced to serve on a
jury.
Shouldn't we go one small, tiny step further to ensure Kentucky's family caregivers and
those they care for have similar accommodations? This is why we need
to enact expanded family friendly jury duty legislation -- legislation that
would allow:
-
Parents/guardians caring full-time for a
baby or young child the OPTION to defer jury duty until the child reaches
the age of 6;
-
Family caregivers the OPTION to defer jury
duty until their caregiver responsibilities have ceased.
After their obligations to their children or
loved ones have been met, most individuals
would be more than happy to fulfill their obligations as good citizens.
Please give your whole-hearted support for expanded family friendly jury
duty legislation for the benefit of Kentucky’s most vulnerable citizens.
Sincerely,
Your name
Your address and phone number
(So your KY representative knows you’re in his/her
district — very important!)
PS -- Currently, 22 states and U.S.
Territories have ‘family friendly jury duty’ laws, and Federal courts
currently have similar policies in 76 percent of their jurisdictions.
This would be good
legislation for Kentucky's families, it won't disrupt our court system, PLUS
– it won’t cost taxpayers a dime!
